Standing Tall for Autism
Standing Tall for Autism
20 years ago, my grandson and I spent time together in the snow for the first time. It was a special day because Jake was our first grandson. He was four at the time. On the way home I put him on my shoulders and then teased him that he was stuck there for the rest of his life. We then imagined all the fun things we could do with grandma if he was the tallest one in the family. Of course, grandma was successful getting him off my shoulders when we got home.
20 years later with COVID-19 time on my hands, I wrote a children's picture book about the adventure. Amy Wummer, a talented illustrator, made the story come to life. During that same COVID-19 time our great-grandson was diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech and placed on the Autism spectrum.
I've been practicing adult medicine for the past 50 years. My knowledge of Autism came from the medical literature. Now, I had the opportunity to experience it firsthand in a loved one. What did I learn? Raising an Autistic child is a challenge! I'm proud to say that my grandson and his wife accepted that challenge with unconditional love, patience, calmness, and consistency. I also saw the difficulty they had in finding a suitable preschool and supportive programs.
I now believe that the two themes of my book, unconditional love and connected family, are essential for the autistic child to reach their potential. This realization led me to commit 100% of the profits from the sales of my printed book and e-book to programs and research that enhance the lives of individuals with Autism.
We are just beginning. To date over $1,000 has been donated to the Autism Society of Hawaii. Please spread the messages of this book and support programs and research for Autism by going to www.ilovebeingtall.com. Click on Order a Book to find links to book buying.
